Monte Amiata

Monte Amiata is the only true mountain in southern Tuscany: an ancient extinct volcano rising to 1,738 metres, with an unmistakable silhouette overlooking the Maremma, Val d’Orcia, and the Fiora hills. The famous “Amiata Ring Trail” is a circular route of about 30 km that circles the volcano, offering spectacular views over the Maremma, Val d’Orcia, and, on clear days, as far as the sea and the Argentario coast.

Around the slopes of the mountain lie historic villages such as Abbadia San Salvatore, with its thousand-year-old abbey and fascinating Mining Museum; Arcidosso, dominated by the Aldobrandeschi fortress; Castel del Piano; Santa Fiora with its Renaissance Peschiera; and Piancastagnaio, overlooking Val d’Orcia. In winter, Monte Amiata becomes a small ski resort, with alpine and cross-country ski slopes and snowshoe trails, offering an unusual experience for visitors to Tuscany.

Just a few kilometres from the mountain are some of the area’s most beautiful thermal springs: the Cascate del Mulino in Saturnia, Bagni di San Filippo with its white travertine pools set in the woods, and other natural hot springs.
